CLAREMONT, Calif. (March 9, 2014) – Senior Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) and junior Caitlyn Hughes (Randolph, N.J.) each scored three goals, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team suffered an 11-10 double overtime loss at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Sunday afternoon.

Claremont improves to 3-3 with the win, while the Ducks drop to 2-3 overall.

After Rafferty scored the game's first goal 2:55 in, Claremont ran off six-straight scores to open a 6-1 margin with 9:33 left in the first half. Hughes' first halted the run at five, but the Athenas quickly answered to regain a five-goal cushion with 6:13 remaining in the opening period.

From that point, the Ducks went on a game-changing run, outscoring CMS 6-1 over the final 33:27 of regulation time to send the game into overtime. Freshman Kathleen Kalbian (Cheshire, Conn.) started the run with an unassisted marker, and freshman Laura Roberts (West Hartford, Conn.) sent the Ducks into the intermission with the momentum and just a 7-4 deficit. Rafferty assisted on the Roberts goal with 53 ticks left in the first half.

Hughes started the second-half scoring with a gorgeous goal thanks to a pretty feed from sophomore Jaimie Mastrogiacomo (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), and following an Athena tally, two-straight Rafferty goals 2:05 apart brought the Ducks within one goal (8-7) with 15:43 to play in the second. The second was assisted by sophomore Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.).

Just 1:24 later, Mastrogiacomo put away a feed from Wilcox to tie the game at eight, completely erasing what was a five-goal deficit. From that point, the two defenses flexed their respective muscles, and the game was played without a tally for the final 14:19 of regulation.

In the first OT, the Ducks scored two goals, one with 3:12 left in the period and another with 1:12 on the clock to open a 10-8 lead. Hughes and Wilcox each recorded unassisted tallies – Hughes on a free-position attempt and Wilcox thanks to a nice 1-v-1 move that created a clean look from the left side.

CMS was able to rally, getting two goals in the final 47 seconds to send the game into a second overtime period. Sophomore Izzy Laterzo (Pelham, N.Y.) and sophomore Christina Coffin (Danville, Calif.) were responsible for the scores. Coffin's goal came via a free-position attempt with just seven seconds showing on the clock..

The second OT changes to a "Golden Goal" format, and the Athenas were able to strike first behind an unassisted goal from Coffin 1:12 into the second overtime. Stevens won the opening draw and was looking to get the ball into the attacking side before a whistle for a questionable infraction gave the hosts the possession and they never gave it back.

Rafferty led Stevens with four points on three goals and one assist, also corralling a team-high five draw controls. Hughes had three goals, and Mastrogiacomo notched a goal and an assist. Senior goalie Sarah Prall (Lansdale, Pa.) had six saves and six ground balls, with Kalbian getting a goal, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control. Wilcox had three points thanks to a goal and two assists, also recording two draw controls, a caused turnover and ground ball. Junior Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had three ground balls, one draw control and one ground ball.

Laterzo had three goals and an assist to lead CMS.

Stevens ended with a 30-23 margin in shots and a 22-17 edge in shots on goal. Stevens finished with a 20-19 advantage in ground balls, and also won 13-of-24 total draw controls.

The Ducks will return to action on Wednesday when they play No. 5 Frankling and Marshall College at 11 a.m. (PDT) at Occidental College in Los Angeles.
