ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 12, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team went on the road and picked-up two wins on Saturday, 9-0 against St. John Fisher College before an 8-1 win against Nazareth College.
The wins moved the Ducks record to 9-8 and keeps them undefeated in conference at 6-0. St. John Fisher and Nazareth dropped to 4-8 and 2-10 respectively. Stevens has now won 38 consecutive Empire 8 matches.
Stevens 9, St. John Fisher 0 Stevens wasted no time in jumping all over the Cardinals, opening the match with three straight doubles wins. Sophomore
Matthew Heinrich and freshman
Antonio Perich got the winning going with an 8-2 win at No. 1 over junior Pat McGrath and senior Sheldon Mitchell, before sophomore
Jacob Thigpen and freshman
Brett Derrington moved the Ducks edge to 2-0 with an 8-0 win at No. 3.
In second doubles, sophomores
Ben Foran and
Tyler Tisdale completed the sweep with a commanding 8-2 win.
Stevens continued to cruise once singles started with Perich's straight-set win at No. 4 over freshman Adam Moran. Thigpen won at No. 6, 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the match before Heinrich picked-up a straight-set win at No. 1 over McGrath.
The Ducks continued to build their lead with Foran's straight-set win at second singles over sophomore Nathanial Ligon, and finished off the win with Tisdale's win at No. 5 followed by freshman
Michael Feldman's win at No. 3
The win was Heinrich's twelfth of the year from the No. 1 spot, while Feldman moved to 10-5 and Tigpen went to 3-0.
Stevens 8, Nazareth 1 Stevens once again gained an early lead thanks to a doubles sweep starting with Derrignton and Thigpen's 8-0 win at No. 3 over junior Matt Jennings and sophomore Brian Rosiek. Heinrich and Perich won their eighth match together at No. 1, 8-1 over sophomore Tyler Williams and senior Erik Manske before freshman
Charles Drake and Feldman polished off the sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 2.
The win was the seventh of the year for the Drake and Feldman duo.
In singles, Derrington started the Ducks scoring with a straight-set win at No. 5, followed by Heinrich's 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Williams to clinch the match. Feldman continued the win-streak with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 before Perich extended the lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 over senior Nick Lord.
Stevens picked-up their eighth and final point with a 6-3, 6-1 win for Drake over sophomore Scott Trobert at No. 3, but Nazareth bounced-back with a tiebreaking win in the third set at No. 6 to salvage a point for the team.
Coming Up
