Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 13, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team dropped its Empire 8 opener at St. John Fisher College by a score of 5-3 Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
The Ducks fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8, while Fisher improves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
St. John Fisher – a conference finalist in 2013 – scored first in this one, taking a 1-0 edge 6:52 in. Junior
Erin Silvestri (Beverly, Mass.) pulled the Ducks even at 15:09, taking a penalty-corner-insert from junior
Dailyn Brook (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and tallying her fourth goal of the season.
Fisher would score two goals separated by 2:30 (16:18, 18:48) to end the first-half scoring, taking a 3-1 margin into intermission.
The lead swelled to 4-1 in the 50th minute of action, but Stevens rookie
Victoria Alvarez (Pine Beach, N.J.) trimmed the deficit back to two goals (4-2) with 18:36 remaining.
The Cardinals answered less than four minutes later to push the margin back to three, with Alvarez getting her squad-leading fifth goal of the season on a deflection to close the scoring.
Over the final eight minutes, Stevens continued to try and fight back. The Ducks were able to generate eight of the game's final nine shots, but were unable to find the back of the net to get within one, eventually falling by the 5-3 final.
Fisher ended with a 24-23 margin in shots, but Stevens finished plus-6 in shots on goal (14-8). The Ducks held a 7-5 margin in corners, and were led by two goals from Alvarez and two assists from Brook.
The loss snaps a 20-game Empire 8 regular-season winning streak for Stevens than began with a 7-1 win over Fisher on September 17, 2011.
The Ducks will look to get back in the win column Sunday morning when they battle at Brockport in a non-conference matchup. Game time is set for 11 a.m. with links to follow the action available via
