Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 3, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team need just over an hour in its home opener to complete the sweep of Hunter College on Wednesday evening in Canavan Arena.
Stevens (4-1) only trailed for four points the entire night in the second set, and used 17 service aces and a .338 hitting percentage to come away with its third consecutive victory. Set scores were 25-14, 25-7, 25-17.
The only time the Ducks fell behind actually took place in the second set, as they went down for the first time at 4-3. After Hunter went up, 6-4, Stevens answered back with a 21-1 run to close out the set.
During the remarkable run, sophomore
Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) notched four service aces and classmate
Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) tallied a pair. On the evening, Sciarra recorded a career-high eight aces, including runs of three in a row on two separate occasions. She also added six kills on a .417 hitting percentage and three digs. Tobin paced Stevens with 11 kills and swung at a .400 clip to go along with three aces and a pair of digs.
Senior
Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) handed out a match-high 27 assists and also contributed three kills, three aces, three blocks and two digs. Freshman
Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) played in two sets and led the Ducks with a .667 hitting percentage on seven kills in nine attempts.
Freshman
Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) tied for a team-best with six digs and dished out four assists, while senior
Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) also registered six digs in a set played.
Sophomore
Becca Youngman (Rochester, N.Y.) added three kills for the Ducks, while senior
Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) and junior
Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) each chipped in two kills. Hall also had two blocks, while Thomas had two digs.
The Ducks held Hunter to a -.017 hitting percentage in the match and finished plus-20 in kills, 35 to 15.
Stevens returns to action on September 5 when it travels to Springfield College for a weekend tournament. The Ducks open with Westfield State at 5 p.m. on the 5th and then play Rivier University at 10 a.m. on the 6th. Opponents after the first two matches are to be determined due to the nature of this weekend's tournament.
