FINAL BOX SCORESTONY BROOK, N.Y. (September 6, 2014) – Junior
Matthew Heinrich became the first player in Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis history to make the finals of the Stony Brook Invitational before falling in the final 6-4, 6-3.
The Ducks were the only Division III team represented in the seven team field comprised of Quinnipiac University, University of Connecticut, Farleigh Dickinson University, Hofstra University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Stony Brook University.
Junior
Ben Foran and Heinrich went up 5-2 in the semifinals of "A" flight doubles to start the day, but FDU's team was able to claw back and eventually pull off the 8-6 win.
Heinrich rebounded in "A" flight singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jake Whalley from FDU. Down 0-3 in the second set, Heinrich battled the heat and came back to get the win and move on. In the "B" flight, Feldman jumped out to a lead with a 6-3 win in the first set, but Stony Brook's Alex Felisa rallied, taking the second set 6-2 before completing the win with a 10-1 win in the third.
In the finals, Heinrich was matched up with FDU senior Arvis Berzins who's amassed over 50 wins so far in his career. Berzins gained the early 3-2 edge before moving it to 5-4 and eventually taking it 6-4. Heinrich battled back in the second, but Berzins took the 4-3 lead before pulling away for the 6-3 win to take the match.
"We're very pleased with everything we saw from the team this weekend," assistant coach
Arik Zeevy said. "It was our most successful Stony Brook Invitational yet, but clearly showed our coaching staff what we need to work on individually to get to the next level as a group. All of us took pride in representing Division III tennis throughout the tournament and look forward to even more success here next year."
