HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 6, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team recorded its second-straight shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over Vassar College in the first match of the 11th Annual Engineering Cup.

The Ducks (2-1) put together a few scoring chances in the opening five minutes of play, but were unable to beat Vassar (1-1) goalkeeper, Emma Nichols. Freshman Megan Lynes (Clovis, Calif.) took the first open opportunity for Stevens only to watch Nichols make a diving save and sent the ball off the post to set up a corner kick. Off the corner, sophomore Raba Nassif (Northvale, N.J.) headed the service towards net but a Vassar defender denied the attempt on the goal line.

Lynes ripped another shot for the Ducks with just under 11 minutes to go in the half that glanced off the cross bar and kept the match at a 0-0 deadlock.

Stevens finally got on the board when senior Ann Heine (Sammamish, Wash.) notched the game-winner in the 65th minute off a corner kick. Heine's initial shot was saved, but she came away with the loose ball and beat Nichols for her first goal of the season.

Nicholas made 13 saves in a losing effort for Vassar.

Freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Mahnken (Bayville, N.J.) picked up her second win in as many games with four saves in all 90 minutes of action.

The Ducks dominated the shot category, 33-11, and took four more corners than the Brewers, 6-2.

Stevens plays New York University tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the final contest of the Engineering Cup.

The Violets never trailed in Saturday's second match of the day. NYU's first goal came in the ninth minute off the foot of Ashley Cardounel which was assisted by Teressa Fazio. That was the only goal scored in the first half.

NYU increased its edge to 2-0 just as the 61st minute got underway as Fazio assisted on her second goal of the game. Lexi Clarke took the short outlet pass from inside the 6' and sent a strike to the top left corner of the net.

Cortland pulled to within one just 4:47 later off a cross that bounced around in the box. Abby Williams sent in a service that eventually found Izzy Ward. Not even four minutes later, Fazio wound up on the other end of a scoring play after she won a 50-50 battle and raced towards an open net.

The Red Dragons attempted a comeback on a long through ball off a set piece from midfield in the 77th minute. Rebecca Carucci cleared the NYU back line and Amanda Margolis raced down the middle of the field to set up a 1v1 opportunity.
