ROCHESTER, N.Y. (OCTOBER 10, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team swept Nazareth College and Ithaca College in straight sets Saturday.
The wins move the Ducks to 13-9 on the season, and they took over the top spot in the Empire 8 Conference with a 5-0 mark. Naz fell to 13-11, 3-2 in the E8 while the Bombers are now 19-2 and 4-1 in conference action.
Stevens 3, Nazareth 0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-21)The Ducks were able to control every statistical category in the match against the Golden Flyers, including a 10-4 edge in service aces. Stevens outhit Naz in all three sets, and saw the hosts have 20 attack errors across the three sets. The visiting Ducks hit over .200 in two of the three periods, while Nazareth did not hit any higher than .139.
Junior
Mary Tobin led the way with 11 kills and was second on the team with three assists and eight digs. Sophomore
Brianna Evans had 10 kills and four service aces, while senior
Annemarie Thomas set a career high with five solo blocks.
Carmen Sapp led the Golden Flyers with eight kills and nine digs, with Olivia Krick chipping in 11 digs from the libero spot.
Stevens, 3, Ithaca 0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21)Stevens once again led the match with 11 service aces compared to the Bombers four. The Ducks were able to snap Ithaca's 15 match winning, dating back to September 5. In the second set, the Bombers went up 15-10 before sophomore
Sydni Horner stepped up to the service line. In a set changing turn of events, Horner rolled off nine straight points including back-to-back service aces.
Junior
Christina Sciarra hit .300 with 13 kills while also chipping in three service aces and seven digs. Freshman
Emily Piekarski, the conference leader in service aces per set, had four in three sets today. Horner had 15 digs and three aces with senior
Catie Shelton handing out 27 assists.
Joelle Goldstein led the Bombers with 10 kills, while Kayla Gromen dished out 31 helpers with 13 digs.
The Ducks are back in action Wednesday for a home contest against New York University at 7 p.m.
