HOBOKEN, N.J. (OCTOBER 13, 2015) – Junior
Mary Tobin of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team recorded her 1,000
th career dig, but the team fell to New York University in four sets Wednesday.
The loss dropped the Ducks to 13-10, while NYU evened its mark at 10-10.
Stevens was outhit in all four sets, but held the advantage in service aces by an 11-8 margin. Over the four sets, the Ducks were outslugged .163-.065.
The Violets opened a 12-9 edge in the opening frame, but the hosts came back to even things up thanks to a service ace by senior
Catie Shelton. The visitors then went on a 6-0 run behind the serve of Daryl Mitchell to go ahead 18-12. The Ducks countered with six straight of their own, thanks to a pair of kills and a solo block by junior
Christina Sciarra and a pair of aces by freshman
Emily Ferguson. A Sciarra service ace handed the opening set to Stevens, 25-21.
After falling behind early in the second period, the Ducks came back on a big-time double block by senior
Annemarie Thomas and Shelton. Stevens surrendered five of the final eight points, and a kill by Olivia Giddens evened the match at one set each.
With the Ducks up 13-10 in the third set, Celine Das subbed in for the Violets and scored six straight points, forcing Stevens into a timeout. An ace by freshman
Emily Piekarski brought the Ducks within two points, but that was as close they would get, as Giddens once again concluded the set with a kill and put the visitors up 2-1.
A 5-0 deficit to open the final period too much for Stevens to overcome. Even after a kill by sophomore
Emily Singleton trimmed the amount down to two, it was as close the Ducks would come to taking the lead. The Violets closed the match on a 4-0 run to take the final set 25-17.
Tobin and Sciarra each notched double doubles, while Shelton handed out 33 assists. Thomas contributed six kills and four total blocks, with sophomore
Mckenzie Kingsbury recording three kills from the middle spot.
Shelby King had 11 kills and 12 digs for the Violets, while Daryl Mitchell dished out 35 assists and eight digs.
The Ducks will be back home Friday to take on Millikin University at 6 p.m.
