HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 14, 2015) – The No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team saw four different players score in the first half Wednesday, to lead the team to a 4-0 non-conference win over the Merchant Marine Academy.
Stevens moved to 10-1-2 with the victory, while USMMA fell to 8-5-1. The win was the fifth straight for the Ducks, extending their unbeaten streak to 10.
Seniors
Colin Phillips,
Carson Pryor, and
Jeff Althoff, and junior
Jay Mikula provided the scoring, while junior keeper
Mike Renna made three saves in net. As a team, the Ducks outshot the Marines 20-4, and won the corner kick battle 5-1.
The Ducks didn't waste any time getting on the board with a goal from Phillips in the second minute of play. After receiving a pass from just over midfield, Phillips beat the defense up the right side of the field before depositing a shot in the top left corner for the score.
The Ducks continued their offensive outburst 23 minutes later with Pryor's goal off a cross from Mikula, followed by a header from Althoff two minutes later off a corner from Phillips. The goal was the first of Althoff's career, while Pryor's was his Empire 8 Conference-leading 12th.
Stevens capped its scoring two minutes after that with a goal from Mikula off a cross from Pryor, giving the Ducks an unsurmountable 4-0 lead heading into the break. The Ducks defense went to work from there, limiting USMMA to just one shot in the second half to seal the win.
The Ducks will continue their two-match homestand Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against E8 foe St. John Fisher College.
