HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 17, 2015) – The No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 11 Saturday with a 4-2, Empire 8 Conference win over St. John Fisher College.
The win moved Stevens to 11-1-2 (3-0-2), while Fisher fell to 2-11-0 (1-4-0).
Senior
Colin Phillips led all players with five points off two goals and an assist, while junior
Jay Mikula added a goal and an assist. The Ducks outshot Fisher 18-5, and tallied 11 corners to Fisher's two.
After some early offensive pressure by the Ducks in the opening seven minutes of the match, Fisher battled-back with the go-ahead goal in minute nine. The Cardinals extended the lead with a score in the 40th minute, however Stevens answered with its first goal three minutes later.
Off a free-kick from Phillips, senior
Matteo Sturla deflected the ball off Mikula into the back of the net for the score. The goal was Sturla's third of the season, while the assists were the sixth for both Phillips and Mikula.
Stevens connected with the equalizer 44 seconds into the second with a goal from Mikula, before taking the lead in the 64th minute off a free-kick goal from Phillips.
Phillips continued the run eight minutes after that off an assist from senior
Harrison Kane, giving the Ducks an insurmountable two-goal lead. Fisher attempted to get back on the board with a shot on goal in the 83rd minute, however junior keeper
Mike Renna easily made the save to send Stevens to the win.
The Ducks will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Rutgers University-Newark for a 7:30 p.m. match.
