Men’s Soccer Tops Utica For E8 Win

UTICA, N.Y. (October 23, 2015) – The No. 16 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team saw three different players score Friday in a 3-1, Empire 8 Conference road win over Utica College.

The win rose Stevens' record to 12-2-2 (4-0-2), while Utica fell to 5-12-0 (1-5-0).

Seniors Colin Phillips, Jeff Althoff, and Chris Renna provided the Ducks scoring with one goal each, while Phillips led all players with three points. Junior keeper Mike Renna made five saves in his 12th win of the season.

The Ducks outshot Utica 14-12, including an 11-6 margin in shots on goal.

After an early shot on goal from senior Carson Pryor was saved, Phillips got the Ducks on the board with a goal in the third minute. The senior beat the defense down the right side of the field before connecting with a shot off the left post for the score.

Utica was able to respond with pressure of its own less than two minutes later, however Renna made the save on a pair of shots to preserve the Stevens advantage through the remainder of the half.

Althoff quickly added to the lead in the 49th minute with a header off a Phillips corner, followed six minutes later by Renna's score off a cross from junior Jay Mikula. The assist was Mikula's team-leading seventh of the season, and third in the last four matches.

Utica was able to break-through with a goal in the 74th minute, however it wasn't nearly enough as the Ducks defense held the Pioneers to just one shot over the final 15 minutes to clinch the victory.

The Ducks will continue their three-match road swing Wednesday when they travel to No. 21 Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
