CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (October 28, 2015) – The No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team dropped an overtime heartbreaker to No. 19 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Wednesday, 4-3 in non-conference play.
Stevens dropped to 12-3-2 with the loss, while MIT moved to 14-1-2.
Senior
Carson Pryor led the Ducks with two goals, while junior
Jay Mikula tallied two assists. As a team, the Ducks outshot MIT 22-18.
The Ducks came out strong with pressure in the opening 15 minutes, before breaking through in minute 28 with the first goal of the match. After a shot from Mikula went off the keeper's hands off a save, Pryor gained control and fired to the top right corner for the score.
The goal was Pryor's team-leading 13th of the season, while the assist was Mikula's team-leading eighth.
Senior
Colin Phillips added to the lead less than a minute later off a cross from Mikula, followed nine minutes later by an unassisted goal from Pryor shot from the 20-yard line.
MIT responded to the outburst though, first with a goal in the final minute of the half before adding another in the 77th minute to cut the deficit to two. The Ducks held onto the lead over the next 13 minutes, however MIT connected with the equalizer in final minute of regulation to tie the match at three.
Phillips narrowly missed the game-winner with a shot off the cross bar early in the overtime period, opening the door for MIT to seal the win with a goal in the 99th minute.
The Ducks will conclude their regular season Saturday when they host Nazareth College at 11 a.m. for senior day.
