Women’s Volleyball Suffers Setback Against Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (OCTOBER 7, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team saw its five match winning streak snapped in a four set loss to Vassar College Wednesday.

The Ducks record fell to 11-9 while Vassar evened its mark at 9-9.

With the opening period knotted six, Stevens used three kills from junior Christina Sciarra and a pair of service of aces by sophomore Sydni Horner to establish a 12-7 lead, forcing the hosts into a timeout.

After the Brewers trimmed the lead to 14-12, junior Mary Tobin rolled five straight points off to go up 19-12. A service ace by sophomore Brianna Evans brought the visitors to within two points of set point, Vassar took eight of the final 11 points to grab a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two was much different, as the Ducks tallied six of the first seven points and never trailed. After hitting .053 in the opening frame, Stevens hit .206 while holding the Brewers to a .077 clip.

During set three, Stevens couldn't recover from surrendering 14 of the opening 18 markers. Even after closing the gap to three points at 23-20, a Duck service error and a kill by Bria Corham gave the hosts a 2-1 lead.

In the final stanza, the Ducks were able to grab a 12-11 lead thanks to a solo block by sophomore Mckenzie Kingsbury to cap a 4-0 run. Vassar used a 4-0 run of their own behind the serve of Corham to grab the lead, but kills from Sciarra and Evans brought Stevens within one. However a pair of unforced errors and a pair of kills from Alex Sams ended the match.

Sciarra had a match-high 19 kills to go along with nine digs while Evans posted a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs. Senior Catie Shelton and freshman Brianna Perez combined to hand out 35 assists while Kingsbury had six total blocks.

Devan Gallagher and Gabby Miller combined for 23 kills and 15 digs with Chloe Hallum chipping in 22 digs.

The Ducks travel to Rochester Saturday for two pivotal Empire 8 Conference matches against Ithaca College and Nazareth College beginning at 11 a.m.
