SCRANTON, Pa. (NOVEMBER 13, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team dropped its season opener to Ursinus College 83-80 Friday.
The Ducks will take on Bryn Athyn College at 2 p.m. Saturday while Ursinus will battle the University of Scranton during day two action at the Hilton Scranton Invitational.
Ursinus grabbed an early 21-9 edge, before Stevens countered with an 8-0 run, capped off with a three pointer from junior
Evan Klimchak. Klimchak would convert a layup and nailed the free throw to trim the deficit to 27-26, but the Bears closed the half with 13 of the final 20, going into the break with a nine point lead.
A layup by Ursinus to open the second half put them up 42-31, but a 13-2 spurt by Stevens evened the contest at 44, with freshman
Ryan Coffey chipping in six and junior
Patrick Barron recording five during the run. The Ducks grabbed their first lead of the evening on a three by Klimchak to put them up 70-68 with just under five minutes to go.
A layup by the Bears Malik Draper put Ursinus back on top at 74-73, but Barron answered back with a trey to give the Ducks their final lead. The Bears closed the contest on a 9-4 run, and Ducks were unable to get any closer than three.
Klimchak and Barron each recorded 27 points, with Klimchak also recording six assists. Senior
Alex Lorenz had a team-best 11 boards to go with four points.
Draper and Patrick Mekongo led Ursinus with 18 points, who had five players in double-figures.
