NEW YORK, N.Y. (NOVEMBER 15, 2015) – Kaitlyn Read led all scorers with 32 points to lead No. 5 New York University past the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team 94-79 in the season opener Sunday.
Senior
Dylan Krause tallied the first points of the season for the Ducks connecting on a three pointer to open the scoring. After a trey by junior
Erica Guketlov, NYU went on 10-2 run to open up a 10 point lead. Senior
Miranda Ripken knocked a long range shot with 30 ticks remaining in the first quarter to bring the deficit down to single digits.
The Violets would extend their lead to 15 midway through the second quarter on a three by Amy Harioka, but the Ducks were able to tally five of the next six, capped off by a pair of free throws from junior
Daphne Ginn. That would be as close as Stevens would get in the half, as the hosts went on a 9-0 spurt to pull away.
After being held to two points in the first two quarters, senior
Kaitlyn Astel poured in 11 second half points. Sophomore
Megan Brown scored nine of her 11 points over the final two frames, as the Ducks outscored their opponents 42-40 over the second 20 minutes.
The difference in the contest was the three point shooting and free shooting, as the Ducks shot 5-of-16 from beyond the arc and only 24-of-41 from the charity stripe. NYU connected on 11-of-18 from three, while shooting 75.8% from the free throw line.
Gutketlov finished with 18 points, while Ripken had 17 points and dished out a team high four assists. Sophomore
Anna Toke filled the box score with four points, four assists, four blocks and seven rebounds, with Brown scoring 11 points and eight rebounds.
Megan Dawe registered 16 points and eight rebounds, while Read was 8-for-10 from the field, and knocked down all five of her three point attempts.
The Ducks will be back in action next Saturday as they travel North Carolina to take on Lynchburg College at 12 p.m.
