GREENSBORO, N.C. (NOVEMBER 21, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team dropped its second straight decision, falling to Lynchburg College 75-65 Saturday.
Stevens fell to 0-2 on the short season, while the Hornets moved to 2-1.
After a see-saw opening quarter ended knotted at 16, LC used an 8-0 run to open the second frame, capped off by a three pointer from Caroline Naumann. The Ducks were able to only tack on 11 points in the period, with the Hornets scored 23, to open up a 12 point halftime edge. Senior guard
Kaitlyn Astel was the lone Duck in double-figures over the first 20 minutes, scoring 10 points.
The Ducks opened the third quarter scoring six of the first eight points, with junior guard
Erica Guketlov starting the run with a jumper in the paint. Stevens used a layup from sophomore forward
Anna Toke to trim the lead to four, but that was as close as the Ducks could get in the period and trailed by five heading into the fourth quarter.
A basket by LC's Sarah Coronel extended the deficit to seven, but senior guard
Miranda Ripken grabbed an offensive board, converted the layup, got fouled and made the free throw to cut the gap to four. Lynchburg countered with a 5-0 run but the Ducks were able to turn around and after a jumper by Toke brought them within three with 5:46 to go. Stevens could get no closer, as the Hornets stingy defense limited their opponents to six points over the final 5:46.
Astel led the Ducks with 16 points, while Ripken and sophomore forward
Megan Brown each had 13. Toke finished with a career-high 10 points, also snagging five rebounds to go along with two blocks.
Naumann led all scorers with 19 points, while Chaney Forbush had 10 points and seven boards for LC.
The Ducks will take on host Guilford College tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C.
