GREENSBORO, N.C. (NOVEMBER 22, 2015) – Senior guard
Kaitlyn Astel hit a layup with four seconds left to give the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team a 65-64 win over host Guilford College Sunday.
The win moved the Ducks to 1-2, while Guilford dropped to 3-1.
The Quakers jumped out to an early 14-7 lead, with Lauren Ramsey and Heaven Walters each recording six points. Stevens answered back with six straight of their own before the hosts closed the opening frame out with an 8-0 run.
After a scoreless 2:33 to start the second period, senior guard
Miranda Ripken started a 6-0 spurt with a pair from the charity stripe. Sophomore forward
Anna Toke nailed a jumper from in close and converted the free throw to give the Ducks a 28-25 lead. A jumper by sophomore guard
Erica Guketlov stretched the gap to six, but the Quakers closed out the quarter with four straight.
The teams traded points to open the third quarter, but a pair of layups by sophomore forward
Megan Brown and a trey by Guketlov put the Ducks back up six. An Astel jumper gave Stevens its biggest lead of the afternoon, stretching the gap to double-digits. The Quakers didn't go away, and closed out the frame on an 11-1 run, tying the game at 54 to end the quarter.
The hosts opened the final stanza with a three-pointer, but the sophomore duo of Toke and Brown answered back with back to back baskets. A three pointer put Guilford up 64-61, but the Duck defense locked down and didn't allow a point for the final 5:54. Ripken cut the lead down to one with 3:26 to go, and the Ducks were able to force a pair of turnovers down the stretch.
Ripken pulled down a rebound off a Quaker miss and Stevens called timeout with 23 seconds left. Even though the Ducks had two misses, Brown and Astel cleaned up the offensive glass and Astel put back her own kiss to give the Ducks their first win.
Astel led all scorers with 18 points while also chipping six rebounds, three assists and four steals. Brown recorded her first double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Toke had nine points and five rebounds.
Ramsey was the top scorer on the Quakers with 17 points while also pulling down five rebounds.
The Ducks conclude their 2015 road schedule with a trip across the river to Brooklyn College on December 2.
