ITHACA, N.Y. (February 14, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team erased a 19-point second-half deficit to improve to 7-7 in the Empire 8 with a 125-120 double overtime win at Ithaca College.
Stevens improves to 7-7 in the Empire 8 and 11-12 overall, while Ithaca drops to 11-12 overall and 8-6 in the conference with the loss.
Freshman guard
Chris Cosgrove led the Ducks in what was a marvelous performance, finishing with a career-high 28 points, 10 assists and six rebounds.
The first half of action saw a combined 88 points scored with the Bombers taking a 51-37 lead into the break. Ithaca jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with two three-pointers and led 12-2 with 16:01 to play in the first.
Stevens fought back within four points after a put-back from senior forward
Kenny Gan made the score 17-13, with the Bombers expanding the advantage back to 11 at 29-18 following a layup from freshman guard Marc Chasin. Ithaca was able to extend its lead to 16 (45-29) later in the period with the Ducks getting a layup Cosgrove to pull within 14 by halftime.
The lead moved to 19 a little less than three minutes into the second, but the Ducks fought to hang around, getting within 15 after Cosgrove found junior forward
Alex Lorenz open for a jumper with 12:31 on the clock. The teams went back-and-forth, before the Ducks made a strong run to get back in the game. Lorenz hit two free throws with 10 minutes left and jumper from sophomore guard
Patrick Barron pulled the Ducks within 11 points. Sophomore forward
Otis Osman converted a feed from freshman guard
Jayson Winick into a pair to bring the lead under double digits at 6:45 (78-69), with a Winick three-pointer and a Sabatino layup making it a five point game (86-81) with 3:46 on the clock.
Ithaca went back up 10, but the Ducks would not go away. An Osman three-point play started an 8-0 run, closing the gap to two points with 1:01 left. Winick hit a layup for points four and five and Barron canned a three to make it 91-89.
The Ducks got a stop on its next possession, giving them the ball with 25 seconds, and senior forward
Patrick Sabatino tied the score at 91 with a driving layup. Ithaca could not score on its final possession and the ball game was headed for overtime.
Cosgrove started the OT with his own 5-0 running, hitting two at the line and a three-pointer to make the score 96-91 with 3:25 left. A stop and Winick layup pushed the lead to seven, with a pair from Gan making it 100-93 with 2:18 to go.
The Bombers hit three-pointers to hang in and force the Ducks to convert at the line, and the hosts fought within one point when Chasin was fouled attempting a three-pointer with 16 seconds left (105-104). Sabatino hit two free throws to push the lead back to three, but sophomore guard Joe Masino hit a three to tie the game and send it to a second overtime period.
Gan started the second OT with two made free throws and a Barron three-pointer with 4:25 on the clock resulted in a 112-108 edge. The two teams went bucket-for-bucket for the next 2:10 as Ithaca fought within two with a layup at 2:01.
Two foul shots from Winick put Stevens on top 121-117 with 1:11 on the clock, and the Ducks earned a much-needed stop to take over possession with 39 seconds left and a four-point lead. Winick hit 1-of-2 at the line before a three-pointer from freshman guard Joey Flanagan pulled Ithaca back within two with 12 seconds left. Sabatino hit 1-of-2 at the line with 11 seconds left, and after a missed Bomber three, Cosgrove sealed it with a pair at the stripe.
Cosgrove needed just 14 shots for his 28 points as he was one of six players in double figures. Gan was also marvelous, finishing the game with career-highs in points (23) and rebounds (19). He added two assists and two steals to his line. Sabatino had 19 points, 10 rebounds, eight blocks and four assists in a near triple double. Sabatino tallied 14 blocks in two games this weekend. Barron had 16 points, with Osman adding 14 tallies and eight rebounds. Winick finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a block in his best game as a Duck.
The Ducks shot 51.2 percent from the field and hit 10 three-pointers on 28 tries. The Ducks scored 50 points in the paint and had 25 assists against just 12 turnovers. Stevens had 13 blocks as a team and four steals, getting 49 points from its bench. The Ducks connected on 27 of 52 free-throw attempts.
The 125 points is the most since a 127-83 win over RPI on January 2, 2012.
Chasin led Ithaca with 38 points.
Stevens returns to action with its final two conference games of the regular season Friday and Saturday when it hosts Nazareth and St. John Fisher on Friday and Saturday. Saturday's Fisher game will be Senior Day and will be a #RedOUT.
