Detweiler Complete Game Helps Baseball Split With Montclair

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 19, 2015) – Freshman Alex Detweiler threw a complete game in the nightcap to help the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball salvage a split in a doubleheader with Montclair State University on Thursday.

The Ducks are now 6-4 on the year, while MSU is now 4-7.

Game 1- Montclair 8, Stevens 4 (7 Innings)

The Ducks scored all their runs in the top first inning, putting across four runs. Junior Jonathan Toro led off with a double and after a walk to junior Nick Sieber brought up sophomore Zeph Walters who singled to right to load the bases. Junior Jayson Yano came up next and hit a single to left center to score Toro with senior Brian Hennelly hitting a sacrifice fly next to score Sieber. After an RBI groundout by senior Ryan Mannello, senior Gregg Nickels launched a double to left center, plating Yano.

Montclair put up eight runs in the top of the seventh inning on only two hits. After loading the two hit batters and a walk, junior Kevin Alonso singled to plate the first run of the afternoon for the Red Hawks which was followed up by a walk to sophomore Matt Long which scored another run. Sophomore Ryan Long then bounced into a fielder's choice, which brought the deficit to one run before senior Christopher Reynolds singled to left center to even the score at four. The visitors would tack on four more runs before the inning would come to a close.

Senior Peirce Marston started, scattering two hits over six innings while punching out seven. The strikeouts helped Marston escape any trouble he was in throughout the afternoon. In the top of the first, the Red Hawks put runners on first and second with one out, but he recorded fly out and a strikeout to end that inning. After single and a hit by pitch put runners on first and second for Montclair in the top of the fourth, Marston fanned the next two hitters to end the threat.

Senior Jonathan Torregroza picked up the victory for Montclair, surrendering eight hits in six innings while striking out four. Reynolds and Alonso each drove in a pair of runs for the guests, who also saw five batters reach base on hit by pitches.

Game 2- Stevens 3, Montclair 0

Detweiler was excellent in his second career start, allowing only eight baserunners for the entire contest. The Ducks struck first in the bottom of the third after Toro reached on a check swing grounder to the pitcher. Toro then swiped second and was brought home on a double down the right field line by Sieber. Detweiler was helped out by his defense in the top of the fourth, when after a single by Reynolds; Sieber snagged a line drive down the line and stepped on the bag to record an unassisted double play.

Smart base-running was key in Stevens' second run of the game. Yano hit a two-out infield single and then stole both second and third before senior Brian Hennelly drew a walk. Sophomore Michael Mule' came in to pinch run, and on a pick-off the ball scooted past the first basemen, allowing Yano to score. The Ducks tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Yano drove in Toro with another infield hit.

Detweiler finished with nine strikeouts and did not walk a batter, while Yano and Toro combined for four of the six Duck hits.

Sophomore Michael Manfra went seven innings for Montclair State, allowing five hits while striking out four. Reynolds had two of the five hits in the nightcap.
