Field Hockey Falls To Fisher

HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 12, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology dropped its Empire 8 Conference opening game to St. John Fisher College Saturday, 3-1 in Hoboken.

The loss drops Stevens to 1-2 while Fisher moved to 3-1.

Junior Taylor Welch provided the Ducks offense off an assist from senior Erin Silvestri. As a team, the Ducks out-shot Fisher 19-9, and tallied 15 penalty corners to Fisher's seven.

The Ducks controlled the tempo early in the first half, resulting in shots from junior Nolie Prouty and Silvestri that were both saved. Stevens continued its pressure with five unanswered shots during a five minute stretch midway through the half, before finally breaking through in the 29th minute.

After a shot from Silvestri ricocheted off the post, Welch gained control of the ball and connected with the back of the net for the score. Both the goal and the assist for the first of the season for Welch and Silvestri.

Stevens maintained its lead through the rest of the half and into the second before Fisher broke through with the game tying goal in the 40th minute. Fisher continued its offensive pressure after the score, connecting on the go-ahead goal three minutes later to put the Ducks in their first deficit of the game.

The Ducks tried to respond with pressure of their own over the next 10 minutes, however Fisher was able to defuse each attack before padding the lead with a goal in the 58th minute. Sophomores Victoria Alvarez and Haines Duff attempted to get the Ducks back into the game with shots late in regulation, however each chance went wide before the clock ran out.

The Ducks will return to action tomorrow with a 10 a.m. game against The College at Brockport in Hoboken.
