HOBOKEN, N.J. (SEPTEMBER 16, 2015) – Senior
Catie Shelton of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team recorded her 600
th career assist, but the Ducks fell to SUNY-New Paltz in four sets.
The Ducks fell to 4-6 on the season while the Hawks evened their record at 5-5. The scores of the match were 26-24, 19-25, 25-21 and 25-14.
In the opening frame, Stevens stormed out to a fast 3-0 lead before the Hawks took control. A 4-0 spurt by the visitors put them on top 12-11, but the Ducks roared back with five straight points, thanks to a pair of kills by sophomore
Brianna Evans, forcing a timeout.
The hosts stretched their lead to 22-15, but New Paltz fought back to cut the lead two. After a double block by juniors
Christina Sciarra and Tobin brought up set point, the Hawks scored the next six points to claim set one.
Stevens never trailed in set two, as they were able to record 14 of the first 18 points. The Hawks did not go down quietly, battling all the way back to make it 14-13. After New Paltz cut the lead to two, sophomore
Mckenzie Kingsbury put away a kill to start a 3-0 run. Tobin finished the period with a kill to even the match at one.
After a back and forth start to set three, it was the Ducks who climbed out to a 13-10 lead, capped off by a pair of unforced errors by New Paltz. The Hawks countered with the next five points and after a side-out, tallied the next two. Stevens climbed to within one at 19-18 after a solo block by Evans, but scored six of the final nine markers to go up two sets to one.
The Ducks grabbed a brief 3-2 edge in set four, but a 9-2 run helped New Paltz take control. After falling behind 24-10, Stevens fended off four match points before a kill by Becca Borquist ended the match.
Tobin and Evans had 15 kills each, with Tobin also notching 15 digs. Shelton handed out 35 assists, including number 600 in the fourth set while tallying eight digs and three service aces. Sophomore
Sydni Horner recorded 25 digs from her libero spot.
Borquist finished with 17 kills and 10 digs, while Anna Paulik recorded 25 digs.
This weekend, the Ducks welcome five other teams to Hoboken for the Ducks Classic. Stevens will take on Arcadia University and Stockton University Friday before battling Kean University and Endicott College Saturday.
