HOBOKEN, N.J. (SEPTEMBER 25, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team won their first two Empire 8 Conference matches Saturday, picking up wins over St. John Fisher College and Alfred University.
The pair of victories evened the Ducks record at 8-8.
Stevens 3, Fisher 1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-16)After dropping the first set despite outhitting the Cardinals, the Ducks controlled the final three periods. In sets three and four, Fisher hit in the negatives while the Stevens only had a pair of attack errors in the final stanza.
Junior
Mary Tobin recorded a career-best 24 digs to go along with 20 kills while freshman
Brianna Perez handed out 37 assists. Sophomore Syndi Horner tallied 20 digs and senior
Annemarie Thomas controlled play at the net with three total blocks.
Meghan Stonebarger led four Cardinals in double digit digs with 14 while dishing out 24 assists. Amanda Miller and Megan Miller each had eight kills for Fisher, who defeated Alfred in the middle game of the tri-match.
Stevens 3, Alfred 1 (25-12, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17)The Ducks controlled the opening set, hitting .360 to the Saxons .087. After making a combined seven attack errors over the first twostanzas, Stevens had 11 in the third set which they dropped. They bounced back well, hitting .448 in the fourth and deciding period.
Tobin recorded 15 kills in addition to 10 digs while Perez handed out 29 assists. The team racked up 17 service aces in the four sets, led freshman
Emily Piekarski who had six.
The Saxons were led by 11 digs and eight kills from Heather D'Andrea and 10 digs from libero Elizabeth Estep.
Stevens is back in action Friday when they take on Utica College at home at 7 p.m. in Canavan Arena.
