EWING, N.J. (January 11, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team saw its four game winning streak snapped by The College of New Jersey 64-59 in overtime Monday.
The Lions (8-6) scored seven of the first nine points of the contest, before junior
Erica Guketlov connected from downtown. After TCNJ scored the next four, junior
Daphne Ginn nailed a shot from deep, putting the Ducks (8-4) only down three after one quarter.
Stevens opened the second period with a 6-0 run to grab the lead for the first time on the evening. The Ducks held the Lions to just seven points in the quarter, and a jumper by senior
Kaitlyn Astel sent the visitors into the half with a four point edge. Both teams shot nearly identical from the field, with Stevens shooting 34.4% and TCNJ 34.6%.
The teams traded buckets to open the second half, but the Ducks offense went four minutes without a bucket, while the Lions only had two field goals over the first four minutes of action. Sophomore
Megan Brown gave the Ducks their largest lead of the night, scoring on a layup with 44 seconds left to go up five.
Astel nailed jumper off a Guketlov feed to extend the lead to seven with 8:14 left, but Angelica Esposito hit a layup and converted the free throw to whittle the deficit to four. Astel answered with a jumper after a three made it a one point affair.
The Lions reclaimed the lead on a jumper by Nikki Schott, but Brown responded with a layup on the next possession. Astel took a pass from Brown and connected on a layup in the paint with 1:20 left to put the Ducks up two, but Esposito hit a pair of free throws to knot the game at 51 with 15 seconds left. Stevens had an opportunity to win the game with six ticks left, but the shot did not go and they headed to overtime.
The hosts scored the first three points of the extra session, but senior
Miranda Ripken converted a traditional three point play to even the match 28 seconds in. The Lions went ahead by three on a layup by Christina Merlin with a shade over a minute left, but sophomore
Anna Toke sunk two from the charity stripe to once again get within one. That would be as close as they would get, as TCNJ scored the final four points to close out the win.
Astel had 16 points in the setback, while Ripken added 12 points and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. The sophomore duo of Brown and Toke combined for 13 points, 13 boards and seven assists, with Brown chipping in a career-best five helpers.
Esposito led all scorers with 23 points, while Schott and Kate O'leary combined for 24 points off the bench for the Lions.
The Ducks resume Empire 8 Conference action Friday, taking on Houghton College at 8 p.m.
