Women’s Basketball Topples Houghton

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 15, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team topped Houghton College 52-37 in Empire 8 Conference action Friday.

After splitting the first eight points, the Highlanders (6-8, 0-5 E8) picked up a jumper from Maisie Pipher to go up 6-4, the Ducks closed the opening quarter with a 5-0 run, with sophomore Megan Brown chipping in three points. Houghton was shutout over the final 5:59 after the Pipher make.

The visitors tallied the first seven points of the second frame, taking a four point lead. But the Ducks (9-4, 5-0 E8) used an 18-3 run to end the half, holding Houghton to just one field goal over the final 8:35. The Highlanders shot only 23.8% from the field in the opening half, and had 11 turnovers.

Stevens scored the first five points of the third stanza, with Brown and senior Kaitlyn Astel connecting in the paint on layups. Sophomore Sydney Darby gave the Ducks one their biggest leads of the evening hitting a layup to put the hosts up 15, and an Astel jumper pushed the lead over 20 midway through the fourth. Pipher would convert a layup and the free throw with 27 seconds left to the gap to 15, and that would be as close as they would get.

Astel led the Ducks with 15 points and seven rebounds, while junior Daphne Ginn finished with seven points and nine boards. Sophomore Anna Toke had 10 points, five rebounds and three, with classmate Megan Brown went for seven points and seven rebounds.

Pipher led the visitors with 15 points, nine rebounds and six blocks, with Elle Reed going for seven points.

The Ducks have a short turnaround and will be back in action at 5 p.m. tomorrow, taking on Alfred University.
