No. 6 Men’s Volleyball Wins Second Straight

UNION, N.J. (January 29, 2016) – The No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team won its second straight match, topping Marymount University in four sets Friday.

The Ducks (2-1) won 25-20, 25-15, 21-25, 25-22, while Marymount fell to 0-1.

In the opening set, the Ducks raced out to an 8-2 lead, capped off by a triple-block from seniors Etan Bennett and Chris Vaughan, and sophomore Thomas Burrell. Marymount battled back to cut the deficit to 20-18 after a service error, but the Ducks were able to tally five of the next seven, ending with a Saints service error.

Stevens never trailed in set two, forcing Marymount into a timeout after an attack error made the score 7-3. After the Saints got within five at 12-7, five of the next six went to the Ducks to put them in control. A Bennett kill put the set away, and gave Stevens a 2-0 set lead.

After hitting .333 and .393 in the first two sets, the Ducks only hit .231 in set three, which Marymount won. At the beginning of set four, neither team was able to grab control, with the Saints taking a 12-10 lead thanks to back-to-back kills from Tomasz Ksiazkiewicz. The Ducks pulled ahead thanks to kills from junior Gabe Shankweiler and Bennett. After Stevens got to match point, the Saints went on a 3-0 run, but Shankweiler put away a kill from senior Scott Russell to end the match.

Vaughan led the Ducks with 13 kills and six digs, while Bennett had 12 kills and a pair of blocks. Russell handed out 44 assists over the four sets.

The Ducks will be back in action tomorrow taking on Rivier College at 10 a.m. and Lasell College at 2 p.m.
