Women’s Basketball Upends Fisher

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 29, 2016) – In one of the biggest games of the year, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team topped St. John Fisher College 51-35 Friday night.

The Ducks moved to 12-5 overall and 8-0 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Fisher fell to 14-3, 7-1 in the E8.

Senior Miranda Ripken opened the scoring, and the Ducks never trailed in the game. Ripken and fellow senior Dylan Krause pushed the home team advantage to 10-4, but the Cardinals hit a layup with 1:45 left in the first quarter to trim the deficit to four.

Sophomore Sydney Darby hit a layup to give Stevens its biggest lead of the opening half, stretching the lead to nine, but Fisher went on a 6-0 spurt to once again make it a single possession game. A 7-2 run by the Ducks put them in control of a 24-16 halftime lead.

Junior Erica Guketlov nailed a trey to open the second half, but Fisher once again went on a 6-0 run to stay in the game. The tough Ducks defending allowed only two field goals over the final 5:39 of the third quarter, and went into the fourth up six.

A 6-0 run to open the fourth frame put the Ducks in the drivers seat, pushing the lead to double-digits once again. The Ducks outscored Fisher 19-9 in the final stanza, and shot 10-of-14 from the charity stripe over the final two quarters to hold off their opponents.

Ripken and Krause combined for 21 points and 12 boards, while sophomore Megan Brown had eight points and 12 rebounds.

Caroline Robertson chipped in 12 points off the bench for the visitors, who also got seven points from Emily Piacentini. The Cardinals leading scorer, Mary Kate Cusack, was limited to just three points in the contest.

The Ducks will be back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. for Senior Day, taking on Elmira College.
