HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 30, 2016) – Senior Katilyn Astel scored 23 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 67-55 win over Elmira College Saturday.
The Ducks won their third straight game, and moved to 13-5 overall and a perfect 9-0 in the Empire 8 Conference. Elmira dropped to 6-13, 3-7 in the E8.
Stevens roared out of the gate early on, tallying the first 13 points of the first quarter. Seniors

Miranda Ripken and
Dylan Krause, who were honored in a pregame ceremony, all scored baskets during the opening run.
Elmira got on the board with 4:39 left in the opening frame, and countered with 10 straight of their own before Astel hit a jumper. After a pair of Soaring Eagles free throws, the Ducks went into the second quarter up three.
The pesky Soaring Eagles went on a 7-0 spurt to open the second quarter before sophomore
Megan Brown stopped the run with a layup. In what truly was a game of runs, the Ducks answered back with nine straight markers, as Astel took a feed from Brown and converted a layup to the put Stevens up seven. An Elmira bucket with 39 seconds left in the first leveled the score at 29 each and the teams headed into halftime.
Ripken scored five consectutive points to give the Ducks a lead they would not give up the rest of the afternoon. Astel and sophomore
Anna Toke hit back-to-back jumpers to push the lead to double-digits, but the Soaring Eagles hit two from the charity stripe to go into the last 10 minutes with a single digit deficit.
The junior connection of
Erica Guketlov and
Daphne Ginn extended the lead to 15 after each hit from beyond the arc. Elmira was unable to get the lead under 10 points, and Ducks benefited by shooting 13-of-15 from the free throw line in the second half to seal the win.
Brown powered the Ducks with a double-double of 11 points and 13 boards to go along with seven assists. The three seniors combined for 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Guketlov had five points, five assists and three steals off the bench.
Meghan Loya led Elmira with 14 points and nine boards, while Danielle Cleary and Lindsey Heaton had 13 apiece.
The Ducks will be on the road next Friday, taking on Houghton College at 8 p.m.
