ITHACA, N.Y. (January 3, 2016) – Sophomore
Megan Brown recorded her third double-double of the season to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to an 84-63 victory over Ithaca College Sunday.
The Ducks moved to 5-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Ithaca fell to 3-6 and 0-1 in the E8. It was the first victory over the Bombers since February 27, 2011 in the E8 Championship game.
Ithaca grabbed their biggest lead of the afternoon when Erin Ferguson connected on a jumper to put the hosts up 11-6, but the Ducks answered back with a 7-0 run, capped off by four straight points from senior
Kaitlyn Astel.
The Ducks bridged the first and second quarters with a 13-0 game-turning run, as seniors
Kaitlyn Astel and
Miranda Ripken combined for 10 of the 13 points. The Bombers trimmed the gap to five after a pair of free throws from Erin Woop with a little over three minutes to go in the second frame, but an 11-3 run by the visitors put Stevens up 13 heading into halftime.
13 would be as close as the Bombers would get in the second half, as the Ducks were able to outscore their opponents 42-34 over the final two quarters, and only had seven turnovers in the second 20 minutes.
Brown finished the day with a career-high 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Ripken poured in 20 points, two shy of her career-high. Junior
Erica Guketlov connected on 4-of-7 from behind the arc, scoring 18 points and six assists, while Astel had 14 points and a team-best three steals.
Ferguson led the Bombers with 19 points on 8-for-8 shooting from the field, while Ali Ricchiuti had 10 points and seven boards,
The Ducks are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Elmira College for a 4 p.m. tip.
