HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 7, 2016) – Sophomore
Megan Brown recorded her third consecutive double-double to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 57-42 win over Utica College Thursday.
The Ducks (7-3, 3-0 Empire 8 Conference) started off on fire, pouring in the first 10 points of the evening. Senior
Dylan Krause scored the first six, and sophomore
Anna Toke and Brown each added layups. A jumper by classmate
Sydney Darby made the score 12-4, the Pioneers (6-5, 1-1 E8) closed the quarter out on a 13-5 run.
Utica scored the first four points of the second quarter before senior
Kaitlyn Astel ended the run. The Pioneers got within two points with 3:48 left in the second frame, but the hosts used a 6-1 run to stretch the halftime edge to seven.
The two sides traded the first four buckets of the third stanza, but senior
Miranda Ripken knocked home a three, and Brown and Toke added layups to put the Ducks back up 15. Stevens held Utica without a field goal for more than seven minutes, and doubled their edge heading into the final quarter. The Pioneers would get no closer than 11 points over the final 10 minutes.
Brown and Krause each scored 11 points, with Brown pulling down 14 boards. Toke finished with six points, two blocks and 10 rebounds, with Ripken going for nine points and eight rebounds.
Alaina Tripp had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Pioneers, with Ashelyne Babb putting up seven points and five rebounds.
The Ducks will be back in action Saturday when they travel to take on Hartwick College at 4 p.m.
