HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 1, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team scored two goals in each of the halves Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 Empire 8 win over Nazareth in Hoboken.
The win moved Stevens to 7-3 (4-0), while Naz fell to 1-10 (0-5) with the loss.
Junior
Victoria Alvarez led the Ducks offensively with three points off a goal and an assist, while senior
Taylor Welch, junior
Katti Thomasian, and freshman
Michaela Thompson chipped-in with goals of their own.
Senior
Emily Stukenborg made one save in the cage to lower her goals against average to 2.31.
The Ducks dominated possession all afternoon with 34 shots to Naz's four, including 23 shots on goal.
Stevens exerted some offensive pressure early before breaking through with the go-ahead score eight minutes in. Prouty set up the goal by firing a shot off the pad of Naz goalie Kimber Nourse, where Thompson gained control and connected with the back of the cage.
The Ducks added one more late in the half when Alvarez batted a ball out of mid-air off the stick of sophomore
Regan Littell, ending a dominant half that saw Stevens out-shoot Naz 21-2.
Thomasian continued the run two minutes into the second with a score off a rebound from Alvarez's shot, before Welch made it 4-0 during the 57-minute mark with a penalty-shot goal.
Naz finally got one back with just over six minute to go to cut the lead to three, but it's as close as they would get the rest of the afternoon as Stevens held Naz shot-less over the final eight minutes to seal the win.
The Ducks will be back in action Wednesday when they start a four-game road swing at New Paltz.
