Stifling Defense Keys Men’s Soccer Win

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (October 12, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team held Staten Island to just two shots on goal Wednesday afternoon in a 2-0 non-conference win.

The win moved Stevens to 7-4-1, while Staten Island fell to 8-5-2.

Senior Jay Mikula and sophomore Daniel Aversano each tallied goals for the Ducks, while freshman keeper Mitko Bozinov converted a pair of saves to earn his first career shutout.

Stevens outshot Staten Island 16-4 including a 5-2 margin in shots on goal, and registered four corners.

Stevens peppered Staten Island keeper Jake Foeldes with three shots during a four-minute stretch 19 minutes into the match, but didn't break through until the closing seconds of the opening half.

With five seconds on the clock, Mikula controlled the ball off the post and blasted it over the lunging keeper for the score. The goal was Mikula's second of the season as Stevens took the one-goal advantage into the half.

Aversano got into the scoring four minutes into the second after taking a cross from junior Tommy Dorsay, giving him his third goal in the last two games, and fourth in the last four.

Steven's suffocating defense took control that point on, holding Staten Island shot-less for the duration of the second half to clinch the win.

The Ducks will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Nazareth for a 1 p.m. match.
