HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 15, 2016) – Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey senior
Taylor Welch scored a pair of first-half goals Saturday to key a 3-1 Ducks win over William Paterson in Hoboken.
The win moved Stevens to 9-6, while William Paterson fell to 6-8.
The multi-goal game set a season-high for Welch as the veteran recorded four shots on goal. Senior
Nolie Prouty chipped in with Stevens' other goal, while juniors
Katti Thomasian and
Victoria Alvarez each recorded assists. Senior goalie
Emily Stukenborg made seven saves.
Each side tallied 11 shots with nine on goal, while Stevens held the edge in corners, 14-11.
Welch got the Ducks on the board four minutes into the half off a feed from Thomassian, starting a string of five unanswered shots by the Ducks on William Patterson's defense.
The Pioneers returned the pressure with three straight of their own, but Stevens' defense withstood the pressure keyed by a pair of saves from Stukenborg. The veteran goalie stopped another opportunity with a nice blocker save 10 minutes later, before Welch made it 2-0 with her second of the game to send the Ducks into the half up two.
The Pioneers finally broke through in the 51st minute to cut the Stevens lead to one, but Prouty answered six minutes later with a one-timer goal from Alvarez.
Stukenborg held the lead with a diving pad save in the 59th minute as Stevens held the Pioneers shot-less over the final 11 minutes to seal the win.
The Ducks will play their final regular season home game of the fall next Saturday when they host Hartwick for senior day.
