HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 18, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team saw its three-match win streak snapped Tuesday night in a 3-1 non-conference loss to No. 7 Rutgers-Newark.
The loss dropped Stevens to 8-5-1, while R-N moved to 16-2-0.
Sophomore
Andrew Masur tallied Stevens' goal, combining with sophomore
Haddy Abdelhady for four shots on goal.
Stevens outshot R-N 14-6, and tallied one more corner.
Rutgers-Newark grabbed the initial lead eight minutes in, but Stevens responded two minutes later with Masur's header off a corner from senior
Jay Mikula. R-N hit the post shortly after, before the Ducks narrowly missed an opportunity of their own with sophomore
Daniel Aversano's shot that sailed just wide.
Stevens unleashed one more offensive attack 30 minutes in with a pair of shots during a three-minute stretch, but the first was saved by R-N keeper Andres Medina before the second sailed high to keep the match deadlocked heading into the half.
R-N took the lead back 10 minutes into the second with an unassisted goal, before adding another 12 minutes later off a penalty kick to put Stevens in a two-goal hole.
The Ducks had their best scoring opportunity in the second with freshman
Andy Diaz-Delgado's attempt in the 85th minute, but the chance sailed just above the bar as R-N closed out the match from there to seal the loss.
The Ducks will continue their three-match homestand Saturday when they host Alfred at noon.
