HOUGHTON, N.Y. (October 29, 2016) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer sophomore
Danny Nasti scored with less than 10 minutes left in regulation Saturday, sealing a 1-0 road win for men's soccer over Houghton.
After over 80 minutes of scoreless soccer, Nasti gained control of the ball out of a scrum in front of the net, knocking it into the back of the net for the game-winning score. Nasti had just entered the match as a sub less than a minute prior.
With the win, Stevens (11-5-1) clinched the regular season conference title, and will host next weekend's four-team championship.
Stevens controlled the action early with three shots on goal over the first 17 minutes that were saved by Houghton keeper Jacob Dunnett. Junior
Patrick Boylan had a chance off a corner in the 24th that hit the crossbar, before sophomore
Daniel Aversano's shot was again saved by Dunnett one minute later.
The Highlanders returned the favor with pressure of their own in the 28th, but freshman keeper
Mitko Bozinov made the stop to send the match into the half deadlocked.
Each side traded shots over the first 20 minutes of the second, before Nasti broke the tie with his goal in the 82nd. Houghton rallied with two final attempts in the closing minutes, but each chance went wide as Stevens escaped with the win.
Stevens will await its semifinal matchup with the remaining league games today.
