HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 8, 2016) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer sophomore
Daniel Aversano scored two goals Saturday afternoon in a 4-3 Ducks win over Utica in Hoboken.
The win moved Stevens to 6-4-1 (3-1-0), while Utica fell to 2-9-0 (1-3-0).
Senior
Patrick Masur and sophomore
David Valian chipped-in with Stevens' other two goals, while sophomore
Jimmy Doran earned an assist.
Stevens outshot Utica 17-7 including an 11-4 difference in shots on goal, and tallied six corners.
Stevens peppered Utica keeper Austyn Diller with six shots over the match's first 20 minutes, before breaking through in the 23rd with the go-ahead goal. Out of the left-side corner, Doran sailed a cross into the box where Aversano connected on the header for the score.
Masur added to the lead four minutes later when he hit the back of the net off a corner, but Utica answered back soon after to cut the lead to one.
The one-goal advantage didn't last long however as Valian's shot in the final minute slipped through Diller's hands to give Stevens the 3-1 lead heading into the break.
Utica got one back on a penalty-shot goal early in the second, but Aversano took advantage of another keeper miscue in the 52nd to put the lead back at two. On a clear attempt, Aversano took the mishit and knocked it into the open net for the score.
Utica scored one more in the closing seconds, but the effort was too little too late as Stevens closed out the 4-3 win.
The Ducks will be back in action Wednesday when they play Staten Island in the first of two-straight road matches.
