ROCHESTER, N.Y. (October 8, 2016) – A St. John Fisher goal late in the second half sealed a 1-0 loss for the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team Saturday afternoon in Empire 8 action.
The loss dropped Stevens to 7-5 (4-1), while Fisher moved to 10-2 (5-0).
Senior
Taylor Welch, junior
Katti Thomasian, and junior
Cassidy O'Hearn each recorded shots on goal for Stevens, while senior goalie
Emily Stukenborg made 10 saves.
The Ducks tallied eight total shots for the day, and registered five corners.
Each team opened the game with offensive pressure, including a lob shot from senior
Nolie Prouty in the 18th minute off a corner that sailed high.
The Ducks had more opportunities later in the half with shots from O'Hearn and Thomasian that went wide, before O'Hearn's attempt in the closing minutes was saved by Fisher goalie Ashley Maynard.
Fisher came out of the half with four corners in their answer to Stevens' first-half pressure, but Stevens' defense keyed by four saves from Stukenborg extinguished the threat without damage. The Cardinals finally did break through in the 57th though off a rebounded shot off the post.
With the lead in hand, Fisher's stingy defense held Stevens shot-less over the final 13 minutes to seal the Ducks loss.
The Ducks will continue their E8 weekend tomorrow at Elmira at 1 p.m.
