HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 15, 2016) – The No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team was unable to overcome a halftime deficit Tuesday night in a 60-48 season-opening loss to NYU.
Junior
Megan Brown led the way for Stevens with a double-double of 14 points and 12 boards, while junior
Anna Toke also chipped in with a double-double of her own of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior
Erica Guketlov scored five points with six rebounds and four assists, and senior
Kaitlyn Astel scored eight with three boards.
As a team, Stevens shot 30 percent from the field.
NYU jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first quarter, before extending it to 12 with four left on the clock. Toke fought back with a layup followed by a pair of free throws from Brown, but NYU responded with a 10-0 run to end the quarter and take a 25-13 lead.
The Violets continued their advantage into the second before going up 32-15 midway through the quarter. Stevens answered with a 10-2 run capped by a layup from Brown however, cutting the deficit to nine heading into the break.
Stevens pulled to within five midway through the third, and again with under two to play off a layup from freshman
Zoe Hahn, but NYU opened the lead back to 10 with a three and layup heading into the fourth.
Stevens would again pull to within five twice more in the final quarter, but was unable to get over that hump as the Violets sealed the game from the line with four free throws in the final minute.
The Ducks will continue their two-game homestand Saturday against Stevenson at 1 p.m.
