Comeback Bid Falls Short For Women’s Basketball

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 19, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team shaved a 14 point fourth-quarter deficit to four, but it's as close as it would get as Stevenson escaped with a 56-51 win Saturday afternoon in Hoboken.

The loss dropped Stevens to 0-2 on the young season, while Stevenson moved to 1-0.

Senior Kaitlyn Astel recorded a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Megan Brown tallied one of her own with 13 points and 13 boards. Junior Anna Toke pulled down 12 rebounds, while senior Erica Guketlov dished out six assists.

After going back and forth over the game's first several minutes, Stevenson turned a three-point lead into 10 off a 7-0 run. Brown ended the drought with a pair of free throws to end the quarter, before an 8-0 Stevens run to start the second brought the Ducks to within two.

Senior Daphne Ginn put Stevens in front shortly after off a three, but Stevenson responded with an 8-2 run to end the half and go up 28-22 heading into the break.

Stevenson opened up its largest lead of the day at 11 four minutes into the third, before a layup and jumper in the closing minutes put Stevens in a 12-point hole. The deficit ballooned to 14 one minute into the fourth, but the Ducks answered with an 11-2 spurt capped by an Astel three to pull to within four.

The Ducks got to within four twice more in regulation, but were unable to get over that hump as Stevenson went 6-for-7 from the line in the final minute to seal the loss.

Stevens will now head out onto the road for the first time this season starting Nov. 28 at Montclair St.
