Women’s Basketball Unable to Overcome Second-Half Deficit in 68-48 Loss at No. 14 Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (November 28, 2016)  – An 11-2 run that began with a buzzer-beating three-point heave to end the third quarter proved to be too much to overcome as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell at No. 14 Montclair State University, 68-48, on Monday night.

Freshman guard Zoe Hahn came off the bench to lead the Ducks with 12 points and junior forward Megan Brown tallied her third straight double-double with 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. Junior Anna Toke grabbed 12 boards of her own, helping Stevens outrebound MSU, 48-41.

Montclair State's Rachel Krauss led all players with 24 points, including 17 in the decisive second half, as the Redhawks outscored the Ducks by 16 points over the game's final 20 minutes to improve to 5-0. MSU has won each of the last six meetings between the schools. The Ducks fell to 0-3.

An Erica Guketlov jumper pulled the Ducks to within seven at 41-34 with 41 seconds to play in the third. Hahn then forced a Krauss turnover that led to a pair of free throws for Brown. The junior sank both attempts, trimming the MSU lead to five with three seconds left in the frame. After the ball was inbounded, Krauss dribbled across the half-court line and heaved the ball towards the basket. The 39-foot attempt was good, reclaiming the momentum, and an eight-point lead, for the hosts.

WIth possession of the basketball to begin the final frame, Guketlov sank another jumper to pull the Ducks to within six, however, Stevens would not record another basket for 3:39, as MSU opened a 13-point lead. The Redhawks shot a scorching 69 percent (9-for-13) from the field in the final stanza, while holding the Ducks to just 20 percent (4-for-20), including 0-for-5, during the game-clinching run.

The Ducks valiantly clawed their way back into the game after MSU opened a nine-point lead in the first quarter, evening the game at 20 on a pair of Daphne Ginn free throws with four minutes to play in the second. Brown would give Stevens its first lead of the game at 22-20, scoring off an offensive putback. MSU would go on to score four of the game's next six points via free throw to reclaim a four-point advantage at the intermission.

Up Next: The Ducks continue a stretch of three road games in 10 days with a non-conference matchup with Haverford College on Dec. 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
