BRONX, N.Y. (December 29, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team was unable to overcome a double-digit second-half deficit Thursday night in a 62-57 loss to Castleton in the Lehman College Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament.
The loss snapped a four-game win streak and dropped Stevens to 5-2, while Castleton moved to 8-2 with the win.
Senior
Evan Klimchak led the Ducks offensively with 14 points, while senior
Patrick Barron scored 12 to go along with three rebounds. Junior
Thomas Cook pulled down five boards with nine points, and sophomore
Ryan Coffey went for five points and three rebounds.
Castleton opened up a 10-point lead seven minutes in, before five straight for Stevens cut the deficit to five. Cook made it four after a three-point play with 7:34 left on the clock, followed by a jumper from Coffey to cut it to two.
Barron put Stevens ahead with a three on the ensuing possession with 5:25 to go, but Castleton responded with a 17-6 run to end the half and put the Ducks back in a 10-point hole heading into the break.
Stevens chipped away at the deficit once again early in the second, before a 7-0 run capped by a Klimchak layup made it 47-46 Castleton just past the midway point of the half.
The Ducks got to within one again with 47 seconds remaining off a tip in from freshman
Dylan Walsh, and once more with 13 seconds to go on a Cook layup, but they would be unable to get over the hump as Castleton went 4-for-4 from the line in the final 10 seconds to seal its win.
Stevens will conclude the tournament tomorrow with a noon matchup against Thomas College.
