BRONX, N.Y. (December 30, 2016) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball sophomore
Jayson Winick hit one of two free throws with one second left on the clock Friday afternoon, sealing the Ducks 78-74 win over Thomas College in day two of the Lehman College Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament.
A pair of free throws from senior
Evan Klimchak with 1:17 left on the clock gave Stevens a 75-70 lead, but two from the line from Thomas capped a 4-0 spurt to cut the lead to one. Freshman
Spencer Cook hit one of his two free throws on the ensuing possession, before junior
Michael Signer grabbed a defensive board on the other end and hit one more from the line to make it a three-point game.
Thomas turned the ball over on its next possession, where Winick put the game mathematically out of reach by connecting on his second foul shot.
The win moved Stevens to 6-2, while Thomas's record fell to 5-5.
Cook led the way offensively for Stevens with a career-high 17 points, while senior
Patrick Barron scored 15 to go along with five boards and a pair of assists. Klimchak scored 10 with three assists and was named to the all-tournament team.
As a team Stevens forced 26 Thomas turnovers and outscored the Terriers bench 32-16.
After going back-and-forth over the game's first five minutes, Stevens rattled off a 10-0 run capped by a jumper from Signer to make it 17-8. Thomas ended the spurt with a three, but Barron answered with one of his own on the next possession to give the Ducks their largest lead of the day at 20-11.
Thomas chipped away at the lead from there before a pair of free throws deadlocked the game at 27 with 3:44 left on the clock. A jumper two minutes later put the Terriers in front, but Stevens answered with a 6-0 run to end the half and put it up 35-31.
Thomas regained the lead two minutes into the second, and built it to six with just over 13 minutes remaining. Stevens battled back however to grab the lead back at 54-52, before a Cook jumper made it 69-60 with under five to go.
Stevens maintained its lead from there, eventually sealing the deal at the line.
Stevens will turn the page to the Empire 8 portion of its schedule with a Tuesday night matchup at Utica at 8 p.m.
