Men’s Basketball Overcomes 13-Point Halftime Hole In Win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 3, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team erased a 13-point halftime deficit Saturday afternoon to top Brooklyn 86-74 in Hoboken.

The win moved Stevens to 4-1, while Brooklyn fell to 2-4. Stevens held the Bulldogs to just 22 second-half points after surrendering 52 in the first.

Seniors Evan Klimchak and Patrick Barron each scored 15 to lead the way for Stevens in addition to eight assists from Klimchak, while sophomore Ryan Coffey compiled his second-straight double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Junior Thomas Cook chipped in with 11 points and seven boards, and junior Chris Cosgrove dished out seven assists.

Stevens shot 49 percent from the field and 75 percent from the line, while the Ducks bench outscored Brooklyn 32-10.

Both sides went back and forth over the first nine minutes of the half, before a layup from sophomore Kevin Florio put the Ducks ahead by one. Klimchak made the lead two with a three one minute later, but Brooklyn responded with an 8-2 run to retake the lead, 28-24.

Barron brought the Ducks closer off a three with 6:59 left on the clock, but the two points were as close as Stevens would get in the half as a 15-0 Brooklyn run with under seven to play set up the large hole for Stevens heading into the break.

The Ducks battled back early in the second, cutting the deficit to seven after a three from Barron and layup from Coffey. Three straight from the line got Stevens to within five with 9:02 on the clock, before a layup and tip-in from Cook on consecutive possessions pulled the Ducks to within one.

A three from Klimchak with 5:43 left tied the game at 70, followed by a three from Coffey to complete the comeback and put Stevens up three. Brooklyn quickly answered with one from the line, but a 13-3 Stevens run to end the game sealed the double-digit win.

Stevens will wrap up its December homestand Tuesday when it hosts Baruch at 7 p.m. at Canavan.
