HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 6, 2016) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball senior
Evan Klimchak became the 20th member of the 1,000-point club Tuesday night as the Ducks topped Baruch 78-57 in Hoboken.
Klimchak achieved the mark just over 11 minutes into the second off a contested layup. The veteran is the first to achieve the feat for Stevens since Patrick Sabatino in 2014.
The win moved Stevens to 5-1, while Baruch fell to 6-2. Stevens has won all five of its games by double digits so far this season
Klimchak scored 17 in addition to four assists and four rebounds in the historic night, while senior
Patrick Barron led the team with 18 on 6-for-10 shooting from three. Sophomore
Ryan Coffey scored 10 with four boards, and junior
Thomas Cook chipped in with six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Stevens shot 40 percent from the field and 47 percent from beyond the arc, while the 57 points were the lowest allowed to an opponent this season.
The Ducks turned a 12-12 tie into an 18-14 lead off a three from junior
Chris Cosgrove, but Baruch battled back to take a three-point lead with five minutes left in the first. The Bearcats lead grew to four shortly after, but a three from Coffey followed by Klimchak's jumper put the Ducks back in front with less than two minutes to go.
Baruch regained the lead off a layup with one minute left on the clock however, sending the Ducks into the half down one at 28-27.
Barron started the second with a three to put Stevens back on top, setting off a 22-4 run capped by another from beyond the arc for Barron. Baruch ended the spurt with three straight to get within 14, but a pair of three throws from Klimchak followed by a three from freshman
Michael Zignorski gave Stevens its largest lead of the night at 19.
Freshman
Dylan Walsh got into the scoring midway through the half to balloon the lead to 20, before back-to-back threes from Barron and Coffey made it 26. The cushion was more than enough from there as Baruch never got closer than 21 the rest of the night.
Stevens will be back in action Saturday against NYU at Hunter in the final action before finals.
