Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

No. 6 Men’s Volleyball Takes Down No. 11 NYU

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 17, 2016) – After dropping a pair of matches on Sunday, the No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball got back on the winning track with a straight set win over No. 11 New York University.

The Ducks moved to 9-3 overall, and 2-2 in the United Volleyball Conference, while NYU fell to 5-6 and 2-1 in conference. The scores were 25-17, 25-23, 25-16.

Stevens forced their guests into an early timeout, scoring seven of the first nine markers, capped off with back-to-back kills from senior Chris Vaughan. The Violets could get as close as six, but a back row kill from junior Gabe Shankweiler ended the opening set.

The back and forth second frame saw Stevens jump ahead 10-7, but NYU countered with five of the next seven. Shankweiler rolled off four straight from service line, and the Violets took a timeout. The pep talk worked as the visitors would knot the set at 22 and Phil Bueno would serve up an ace to put the Violets in front. The Ducks crawled back and recorded the final three points, with Shankweiler and sophomore Thomas Burrell combining on a double-block.

NYU raced out of the gates in the final stanza, going up 5-1. After a service error, junior Jordan Stuart took advantage of five straight unforced errors, putting Stevens up for good. Freshman Jacob Stillman would serve up an ace, and senior Tim Ferriter ended the match with a thunderous kill.

The Ducks hit .356 over the three sets, and were led by Shankweiler's 12 kills. Vaughan chipped in 11 kills and four digs, while Ferriter had 10 kills and seven digs.

Nick Benson led NYU with 12 kills and three aces, with Bueno chipping in 10 kills and 2 aces.

The Ducks will host a tri-match on Sunday, welcoming Rust College and York College to Canavan Arena.
