HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 20, 2016) – Junior
Michael Mule' belted a three-run homer run in the bottom of the eighth inning to send the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team past SUNY-Old Westbury 5-3 Saturday.
The Ducks moved to 2-0 on the year, while Westbury fell to 0-1.
Stevens wasted no time scoring, as speedy senior Jonathon Toro reached on an error and moved to third on a stolen base. Classmate
Jayson Yano lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Toro and put the Ducks on the board. Old Westbury would take the lead in the top of the second, scoring a pair of unearned runs off of one hit and a passed ball.
The game remained at 2-1 until the fifth inning, when Dean Sheridan of Old Westbury recorded an RBI single, scoring Kevin Lao and putting the Panthers up 3-1. The Ducks had trouble with Jeremy Charles on the mound, who surrendered only three hits in six innings, striking out nine.
Ducks starter
Robert Robbins went five innings and was replaced in the sixth by sophomore
Andrew Hamel. Hamel would surrender a lead-off double, and loaded the bases with two outs. Tommy Ziegen hit a grounder to first, that Yano snared and dove toward the bag, just nabbing the speedy Ziegen.
Senior
Bret Viola led off the eighth inning with a walk, and freshman
Carlos Leon was drilled with a pitch. Toro laid down a perfect sacrifice to bring up Mule'. The junior smoked a ball over the right center field wall to tack on three runs and give the Ducks lead. Junior
Zeph Walters would drive in an insurance run with a ground rule double.
Senior
Ryan Patterson worked a perfect ninth inning for his second save in as many days. Yano went 2-for-3 with a pair of steals, while Viola reached base all three times. Hamel worked three innings in relief, earning the win in relief with four punch-outs.
Michael Cardino had a pair of hits for the Panthers, who left eight men on base. Aguilo was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs in 1.1 innings.
The Ducks will take on SUNY-Brockport tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Kean University.
