Men’s Basketball Clipped By Fisher, Still Cinches E8 Playoff Spot

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 20, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team fell to St. John Fisher College on a last-second layup 68-66 Saturday, but still clinched a spot in the Empire 8 Conference Championship.

Down four with 1:36 to go, the Ducks climbed their way back with a layup form senior Alex Lorenz, followed by the game-tying layup from junior Evan Klimchak with 35 seconds remaining. Fisher was able to provide an answer however with Tyler English's game-winning layup in the final seconds.

The loss ends Stevens' regular season at 12-13 (8-8), while Fisher moved to 20-5 (14-2). With an Ithaca College loss, the Ducks clinched their position as the fourth seed in next weekend's Empire 8 Conference Championship.

Klimchak led the Ducks with 20 points in addition to eight rebounds and five assists, while sophomore Chris Cosgrove scored 13. Junior Patrick Barron chipped-in with nine points, and senior Alex Lorenz and freshman Ryan Coffey each scored seven.

As a team, the Ducks shot 46 percent from the field, and 80 percent from the line.

After going back-and forth over the first five minutes, Fisher opened a 16-point lead with 11 and half to go after a 17-0 run. Barron ended the drought with layup however, kick-starting a 9-3 Stevens run to get the Ducks to within 10 with under six to go.

The Cardinals were able to build the lead back to 12, but a 13-4 Stevens run capped by senior Kevin Zychowski's three cut the deficit to four heading into the break.

Stevens clawed its way back to within one two and half minutes into the second, but Fisher was able to maintain its lead before extending it to six past the midway point of the half. Freshman Kevin Florio got it to within one with 2:24 to go, but it's as close as the Ducks would get before Fisher's game-winning layup.

The Ducks will face a re-match against Fisher in Rochester Friday in the semifinal of the E8 Championship.
