NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 27, 2016) – No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team topped Baruch College in five sets on Saturday.
The Ducks moved to 14-4, while Baruch dropped to 7-6. The set scores were 25-16, 28-30, 30-28, 19-25, 15-11.
Stevens hit a blistering .455 in the opening set, holding the Bearcats to just .042. A kill by Stephen Roach brought the Bearcats to within 9-8, but Stevens scored three straight to pull ahead for good. A pair of unforced errors by the hosts handed the opening to Stevens.
The Ducks never led in set two until the end, but a Roach kill put Baruch up 21-15. The Ducks didn't back down, and senior
Tim Ferriter served six straight points to knot the score at 21 all. A Duck service error brought up set point for Baruch, but again a pair of unforced errors evened things up. Ferriter notched a kill to put the Ducks up, but Baruch scored four of the final five tallies to even the match.
Baruch would jump ahead 10-7 thanks to a pair of Duck attack errors, but juniors
Gabe Shankweiler and
Jordan Stuart combined for a block, and then Shankweiler slammed home a kill to even the score at 10. After Baruch went up 15-12, Stevens went on a 4-0 spurt, finished with a vicious double block from sophomore
Thomas Burrell and freshman
Dylan DeBoer. A DeBoer kill brought up set point, but Baruch tied it and the frame was even at 25, 26, 27 and 28, before the Ducks registered the final pair.
With the fourth set even 16, Baruch rolled off six straight and the Ducks were unable to recover and the Bearcats tied the match at two sets each. Baruch went ahead 4-1 in the final frame, but countered with a 6-0 run, ended with a double stuff block from senior
Chris Vaughan and Burrell. Baruch got within 12-11, but the Ducks scored the final three points to earn the win.
Shankweiler led the Ducks with 12 kills, while Ferriter had 10 kills and two aces. Burrell controlled play at the net, notching six total blocks.
Brady Ambro had 23 kills for Baruch, who also received 61 assists from Scot Standring.
The Ducks are back in action March 2, traveling back to New York to take New York University.
