No. 5 Men’s Volleyball Bests NYU In Five

NEW YORK, N.Y. (March 2, 2016) – The No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team trailed two sets to one before rebounding to top No. 13 New York University in five sets.

The five set win was the second such in a row, as they topped Baruch College in five Saturday. Stevens moved to 15-4, while NYU fell to 7-7. The set scores were 21-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 25-10.

A Duck attack error put NYU up 10-5 in set one, before Stevens scored five of the next seven. The Ducks came all the way back and a service ace by senior Chris Vaughan evened the set at 17. NYU would score eight of the final 12, capped off with a kill from Chase Klein.

Once again NYU took a big lead, jumping ahead 7-4. They pulled in front 17-11, forcing the Ducks into a timeout. Stevens took advantage of the timeout, scoring 11 of the next 14, with senior John Eddins serving up an ace to conclude the rally. The hosts got within one point, but junior Gabe Shankweiler and Vaughan notched back-to-back kills to even the match.

With the Ducks up 15-14 in period three, the Violets rolled off six straight to take the lead for good. Stevens cut within one after a Shankweiler kill, but could not get closer.

The Violets used a 4-0 spurt to go up 13-11, but the Ducks took control, and after a service error gave Stevens a 17-16 lead it wouldn't give up. Junior Jordan Stuart fired home an ace, and a Violet attack error forced a deciding fifth set.

Despite falling behind early and seeing the period knotted at four, five and six points, the Ducks were able to take control behind the serve of Jacob Stillman. Stillman propelled the Ducks into a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Ducks took advantage of a pair of unforced Violet errors to claim the match.

Senior Tim Ferriter recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 10 digs, Shankweiler had 11 kills, eight digs and tied for the team lead with six total blocks. Senior John Eddins dished out 39 assists in the victory.

Phil Bueno led NYU with 17 kills and three total blocks, while Derrick Chiu had 45 assists and 11 digs.
