HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 28, 2016) – Junior
P.J. Wiegartner drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to give the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team a 6-5 over Drew University Sunday.
The Ducks snapped a two game losing streak and moved to 3-2, while Drew dropped its season opener.
After a scoreless two frames, the visitors potted two runs in the top of the third. Isaiah Mateo reached on a two-out single, and the bases were loaded after a pair of hit batsmen. Michael Miraglia stepped up and hit a two-run single to right field to give Drew a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, senior
Jayson Yano knocked in freshman
Carlos Leon, who had reached on a one-out walk. The Rangers tacked on an unearned run in the fifth inning, but had another run gunned out at home plate thanks to a strong throw from junior
Michael Mule'.
Yano created his own two-out rally in the fifth, singling and moving to third on a pair of stolen bases. Junior
Zeph Walters knocked him in with a single to right field. After a three-base error in the top of the seventh, Tommy Broyles drove in a run for Drew with a groundout, extending the lead to two.
The Ducks tied the contest in the bottom of the seventh, as they were able to load the bases with one out. Senior
Nick Sieber hit a grounder to short that was booted by the shortstop, and junior
Nolan Bennett followed that up with a ribbie single to even things up at four.
Pinch hitter
John Sideris drew a walk to open the bottom of the eighth, and pinch runner
Harrison Kaye promply swiped second and moved to third on a throwing error. Senior
Jonathan Toro stepped up and delivered a single to left to give the Ducks a lead.
Miraglia belted a homer to right center to extend the game in the top of the ninth, but the Ducks were able to walk off in the bottom of the inning. Walters led off with a double, and Sieber worked a walk. Bennett executed a perfect sac bunt, and after an intentional walk, Wiegartner came up to pinch hit. Five pitches later, pinch runner
Matthew Pasko scored on the walk, and the Ducks celebrated the win.
The team swiped four bags, and Bennett went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Yano had two runs scored in going 3-for-5, while Walters was on base four times. Senior
Danny McIntyre picked up the victory in relief, getting the lone batter he faced out.
The Ducks will be back in action Wednesday night, hosting New Jersey City University at 6 p.m.
