HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 2, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball fell to in-state rival New Jersey City University 8-6 Wednesday evening.
The loss dropped the Ducks to 3-3, while NJCU won its opener.
The Ducks tagged Gothic Knights starter Ray Liguori for four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a timely error. Senior
Jonathan Toro led off with a single, and the next two men drew walks. Junior
Zeph Walters hit a ball that should've been a double play, but was booted by the second basemen, scoring a pair.
Senior
Nick Sieber followed that up with an RBI fielder's choice, and junior
Nolan Bennett legged out an infield single. Classmate
Garrett Wells dropped a double that landed in no man's land, scoring Bennett all the way from first.
The Gothic Knights clawed back, tacking on solo runs in the fourth and sixth while also tacking on a pair in the fifth. Liguori settled down, and didn't allow a run after the tough first inning. The Ducks added two runs in the sixth, on an RBI double from senior
Jayson Yano and a fielder's choice from Sieber.
The Gothic Knights struck for four in the eighth, all with two outs. The big blow was a three-run double to left center by Andrew Niech. Joe Coutinho followed him up with an RBI single. The Ducks put runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to capitalize.
Yano was the lone Duck with two hits, but junior
Michael Mule' reached base three times and scored a pair of runs. Sieber had a pair of RBI's while the Ducks as a team drew seven walks. Sophomore
